CompactDry BC (X-BC) - Bacillus cereus

CompactDry BC plates combine the properties of chromogenic dry media and gel contact plates. It is used for the quantitative detection of Bacillus cereus in food samples. Bacillus cereus forms light blue to blue colonies.

Other potential contaminated bacteria may also grow and form white colonies in this plate, However, only light blue/blue colonies should be counted. Related species, Bacillus thuringiensis may
also grow and form light blue/blue colonies.

Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive, aerobic, spore forming bacterium which thrives in soil, vegetables, and various raw and processed food products.

Bacillus spores can survive in extreme conditions and then germinate when conditions are favourable, making spores difficult to eliminate.

At high bacterial concentration, B. cereus produces toxins that are responsible for food poisoning after ingestion of contaminated unrefrigerated prepared food, causing gastroenteritis. Monitoring B. cereus during the food production process is critical for food safety as a release parameter for cooked meat, vegetables and ready meals.

Incubation
Time: 24+/- 2 hours
Temperature: 30+/- 1°C

Interpretation
Green/ Blue colonies
